New Mexico is located in the Southwestern region of the United States.  In terms of sheer land size the state is the 5th-largest but its population is small in comparison. The state's largest metropolitan area is that of Tiguex. New Mexico's official mammal is the American black bear. It was the 47th state to join the Union.
