Western European country comprised of two former countries; the Soviet-occupied East Germany and West Germany. The division happened after Germany was defeated in World War II. The Berlin wall was a concrete barrier that separated the two countries from 1961 to 1989.

Trivia

The East German government announced in November of 1989 that citizens could visit West Berlin. Crowds of people descended on Berlin and started climbing over the wall. The wall was ultimately demolished between 1990 and 1994.   Germany hosted the World Cup in both 1974 and 2006.
