6th largest state in the United States. It is also the 14th most populated state in the US. Arizona was the last of the lower 48 states to join the Union. The state's official land mammal is the ringtail. Arizona's largest metropolitan area is that of Phoenix. Much of the state's land was included as part of the Gadsden Purchase in the mid 1800s.

Arizona became part of independent Mexico in 1821. The retail chain PetSmart has its headquarters in Arizona. There are 22 national parks and monuments in Arizona. Phoenix is the hottest city in the US.
